The Constitution for the United States of America, which was adopted in 1787, is the oldest written national constitution still in use. It provides a framework for the federal government outlining the powers of the three branches of government: the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The Constitution also establishes the basic rights of individuals, such as freedom of speech, religion, and the press, and the right to a fair trial.
